Hi Tara,

This is a follow up from bug 768187.

The t-shirt will be mainly distributed to the persona team and current/prospetive partners/developers implementing persona in their sites.

I will leave the creative direction to you and your team. I assume we want something that our partners and developers would recognize, so utilizing the brand of persona.

Adding Matej for the copy direction. We might not need copy, unless we can come up with something short and witty that mainly shows support/advocates persona.

Timing: The launch is early August and ideally we would like to have it by then. We also need a couple of weeks for production. Would it be possible to get something by end of the next week?

Please let me know if you need anything else.

Grace
Hi Tara,

Please let me know if you have any additional questions here.

Thanks!
Hi Grace

Something by end of next (strike that, *this*) week will definitely be a challenge. Couple of weeks for production seems fair, but is there a way we can compromise so that you can rush the production with your vendor while we get designs to you asap?

If the branding of Persona has been finalized, then we could do something fairly simple and pull from the existing visual ID. If the visual ID/branding is still in flux then it's trickier since we may not want to produce assets based on a Visual ID that will soon be obsolete...creating confusion/conflict, etc. If it's very internal, then perhaps it's fine and it's just a nice 1.0 type shirt capturing the early lifecycle of Persona and appreciated by the team that was a part of it.

That said, I think having *some* text would be great. I haven't been part of the Persona branding or messaging so perhaps Matej can offer some nuggets of wisdom re: copy, and Sean/John can offer some thoughts wrt the design.

Meanwhile, what is the latest the design can be handed off to your vendor? If we can deliver next week (mid to end of next week) will that work?
Sorry my eyes scanned and forgot the answer to my question: I see that it's not just internal but directed towards partners/developers. So, the question stands re brand identity and the lifecycle of the designs... and potential brand conflict if the Identity is in flux.
Sean created a really nice logo for this that I think would look great on a shirt. Plus, it still hasn't been seen that widely yet so it would have an element of freshness.

I vote we do that. Simple and good.
Sweet. Thanks John. Can we have the file for that? Unless Sean wants to whip up a shirt, I suspect we'll need someone else's help (with the source file)

So, does this mean no text?
I can whip up a shirt. no problem. I'll put it on the list for this week.
Sean wins!!! ding ding ding.

thanks team!

Sean, looking forward to it!
hi team,

friendly ping. any updates on the design?

thanks!
Grace, what is the due date? Sean is taking this.
Hi Tara,

I am hoping this week the latest.
It will take about 2-3 weeks for production and we're trying to get the shirts before the Persona launch in early August.

Thanks!
Hi Tara,

Wanted to follow up to see if we will be able to review a design before the end of week?

Additionally, this design will also determine the design of the stickers. It would be great if we can provide some direction to Ty on the stickers by this week.

Thanks!
Grace, does this need text or url on it? if so, what are those?

I was thinking "A better way to sign in" or "A better way to sign in to websites."

Grace, do either of those work for you?
A better way to sign in or log in sounds good.
Sean...update please?
Hey all.

Artwork preview here: http://cl.ly/image/1j3e2G3q0u2M

- nice full color logo on front (there is a transparent gradient shadow. confirm they can print that. they should be able to print them as we use them regularly. )
- back brand + tagline in pure white, because we can. makes front pop.
- standard mozilla sleeve.

Once I get a confirm, I'll post the EPS for the printers.
I think this should work. Sean, in the interest of time can you please post the EPS files?

Also, Please be sure that Ty has the EPS files as well so he can work on a sticker option or two real quick.

Thanks.
Thanks for sending this over.

Like about the design:
* Using the Persona logo/branding is good for product/brand recognition given this is a new product. This will also be good for increasing product/brand awareness.

I also sent the design to the team for review. Some feedback from the team:
*Making the shirt bolder - This is doesn't mean we need something more abstract. One way to achieve this is through the tagline.
* Current Tagline - "A better way to sign in." I initially agreed to move forward with this tagline (prior to consulting the team), we want to see more alternatives to choose from preferably something more punchier and bolder. Ben's example: "connect on your terms."

Timeline:
* initial deadline: design: now + production time = tshirt ready by beta timeframe (August 15)
* We are open to moving the t-shirt deadline back for alternative designs - getting the design before or by August 15. This should give us a couple more weeks to get additional design proposal.

also adding Ben for any additional feedback or if you guys have any additional questions.

Thanks!

This line was based on positioning and branding that exists elsewhere. I don't think we should be coming up with a tag line just for the shirt, especially not for a new product we're trying to educate people about. We should be fairly consistent where we can. I'm also worried that coming up with a new line opens a can of worms and could be a pretty lengthy process.

Let's also not forget that because this is a new product, people won't know what it is, so we should be as clear as possible. "Connect on your terms" has a nice benefit built in to it, but it's pretty vague and doesn't tell people anything about what the product actually does. It feels like maybe we're overthinking this for a shirt (i.e. our overall branding should dictate what goes on the shirt, not the other way around).
I've had a few hallway chats with Grace and am starting to get a better sense of what the team wants, but still would like to get more input. Ben, can you elaborate on what you have in mind?

To me, the existing design is pretty cool and styley, but if you want something that goes beyond a logo (even an awesome logo) it would be super helpful to get examples of what you like so we can make sure we're on the same page.

Once we have that info, my recommendation would be to kick this over to one of our freelancers who do a lot of shirts so time will be less of an issue. But for starters, any guidance you can provide is key. Thanks!
John: thanks for your help on this.

My goal is a t-shirt that is aimed at developers and early adopters. A good bit of edge to it, a punchy tag line (maybe one that's more risque than we would do on the public web site), something that can become the awesome first run t-shirt that every early adopter wants.

Things that would be awesome, but no single item is required, just listed here to give you an idea: big letters, punchy tag line (e.g. "connect on YOUR terms"), awesome mascot, maybe in the style of the FX4 Beta t-shirt, where it looks like a blueprint of a logo that's not quite ready yet?
Got it, thanks Ben. I don't think a mascot is in the cards here, but let me find the right person to help with this and we'll share something new sometime soon.

Quick question: should we use "Connect On Your Terms" as the main t-shirt line? Perhaps build a type treatment design around that?

I think it works, but wanted to confirm...
John: yes I think that is the tagline everyone likes. There was talk of bolding or otherwise emphasizing "your", so if you want to work some type treatment around that, that would be great.
Sounds like a plan, thanks.

Current status:
- reassigning bug to Matt
- plan is to build a type treatment around "Connect on Your Terms"
- next creative review will be later in the week

Hi guys,

I've had some time to work out a t-shirt concept which focuses on the tagline 'Connect on Your Terms'. The idea is a retro 50s inspired type logo or signage, that incorporates some old school iconography such as the radio antenna, electrical cord and bolt to accompany the type itself...thought that may be a subtle and fun way to play up the 'connect' part, without taking away the focus of the word 'Your'.

Please let me know if how you feel about this direction.

Cheers,
Matt
Matt: cool! We like the direction a lot. Any way to integrate the Persona arrow?
Thanks Matt - I really like what you came up with in comment #27.

Re: the Persona arrow, that would have been helpful to know about up front. Since the design Matt proposed holds together well without it, what if we integrated the arrow shape by putting the logo on the back? As in, not too big & between the shoulder blades.
Thanks guys,

I've attached another version displaying a backside to the t-shirt. I've taken John's suggestion about incorporating the Persona logo...one thing to note is I have altered the colouring of the logo to the flat colour palette used on the front side...the gradient on the arrow is reduced to a solid orange and the white lettering to an off white. I realize this may go against the brand a bit, please let me know if you think we could get away with this look.
I think it looks great!
Looks great to me too. Thanks Matt!
adding Crystal and Lloyd for some additional comments.

Overall, I like the direction. On second look, the one thing I wonder about is whether the "eletricity" implication (obviously jiving with "connect") of the front might be confusing when you're talking about connecting your data.... Crystal, Lloyd, thoughts?

Don't get me wrong, I like this direction :)
+1 on this design from me.

I think for the target audience getting these, they won't be reading too much in to the artwork when it comes to "connect" and "electricity". getting that granular with reading meaning into the tshirt artwork might be overkill for this.
Agreed 100%. Out of all due respect to this project, we're already past the number of cycles we had allotted for it. Of course we want everyone to be happy with the results, but we need to be moving this toward a happy resolution rather than continuing to explore ideas.

Given that the feedback on Matt's latest design has been positive, I would suggest that we wrap things up and proceed with that.
I'm cool with this. But, I think there is a very minimal change that can emphasize what we're trying to say - "Connect on your terms" is not a catchy slogan, but rather an industry challenge. I think if you use two shades of blue on the front logo, it might be a lot harder to miss:

#3b5b99 & #6d85b4

just a thought trying to optimize in the 11th hour at low cost.

Orange is us, Blue is them.
Thanks for the feedback!

Considering Persona's logo is orange, I don't think that color is an issue. :)
(jumping in as I help out with Persona product marketing)

Sean, MT, John - all good. Can you attach the EPS file for layout 2? We'll get it printed through my account at Staples.

Thanks! :)

And AWESOME work -- thank you!
Awesome, thanks Pascal.

Matt, please post the final artwork here whenever you can.
All good. Thx guys. Can we get some ladies xs? :D

You bet!
Hi guys,

Sorry for the delay on this, but here is a link to the finalized t-shirts designs, front and back along with a positioning reference. http://cl.ly/1V051Z3f2w2h

Please let me know if anything else is required.

Thanks!
Matt
One late-breaking thought I just had: I don't want this t-shirt project to be ground zero for a discussion of how we brand Persona, but I know that we're now calling the Marketplace the Firefox Marketplace (vs Mozilla Marketplace).

With that in mind, it would seem like a safer bet to remove the Mozilla Persona wordmark from the back. If you guys are comfortable waiting it would be ideal to see how the branding thing shakes out and then adjust (or not) as needed. Alternately we could remove the wordmarks and just have the logo on the back, but that's not really ideal from a messaging standpoint.

Pascal, wdyt?
John: we've gone through the branding discussion already and made a big effort with the community to rebrand to Mozilla Persona. Chris Beard agreed that we would go with this brand for the Beta, slated to last into mid-2013. So I'd like to move forward without reopening this discussion. If a rebranding happens next year, so be it, but for now I think we're set and should move forward.
friendly ping: status? can we close this?
yes, this is closed, thanks!
